On April 8, 2019 Lazio Hockey Prato Giovani went to visit the School l’IC Castelseprio in Rome to introduce the Project Field Hockey for Women co-funded by the European Union Erasmus +. The turnout of children and teachers was incredible, about 140 participants all together along with the support and participation of a representative of the Italian National Olympic Committee.
The project coordinator, Gabriella Bascelli, along with the President of Lazio Field Hockey, Roberto Brocco, spoke to the children, teachers and school coaches about the objectives of the project. This project aims to promote the female presence in a field hockey as a sport. It addresses the European polices in the field of sport in that its main focus is to increase the female presence in a sport considered to be “masculine”, thereby addressing a very important European policy being gender equality between men and women. They also demonstrated how hockey is played along with much more information regarding hockey as a sport.
Not only were the numbers positive, but many questions were raised and afterwards the children enjoyed trying out hockey with the help of the coach and President of Lazio Field Hockey, Roberto Brocco.
We would like to thank the European Commission and the Erasmus+ program for the fantastic opportunity to be able to reach out to our youth through this project and not only teach the children about field hockey, but create awareness on how the European Union is helping so many sectors of sport through their programs and policies.
